creme de la cream | Simply Serendipity

In my young essential oil life I have done the most projects and experimenting with body creams. It actually started when a friend told me about Skin Deep. It’s basically a big database of cosmetic products that are rated according to their ingredients and those ingredients’ correlation with negative health conditions. It’s terrifying. I should not have been so surprised. I mean, have you tried to pronounce the ingredients on the back of your moisturizer?,

I decided it couldn’t be that hard to make my own products. After visiting a few different websites, (like this one: http://beautyinthemess.com/lotions-essential-oils/ and this one http://wellnessmama.com/3765/homemade-lotion-recipe/ ) I tinkered with some different recipes, and came up with my favorite body cream base. The beauty of this is that you can really change the recipe to fit your needs or the amount of time you have for the project! For example, if you are in a crunch, its perfectly acceptable to put a few drops of your favorite essential oil into some coconut oil and just mix it up. If you have a little more time, try the “Use it on Anything Cream”. It’s my favorite as a facial moisturizer.

Use it on Anything Cream

  • ½ cup of raw shea butter
  • ½ cup of coconut oil

I love to store my lotions in glass jars. It makes me feel a little fancy and it’s easy enough to wash them in the dishwasher after I run out of my mixture.

Did you know this is what raw shea butter looks like, you probably did… I had no idea

Melt the Shea Butter and Coconut Oil in a saucepan until liquid, place saucepan in the freezer.

Now comes the one and only difficult part: the timing.  Leave the saucepan in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes, then you will need to check the pot about every 5-10 minutes.  Once the mixture is solid-but not hard, it is ready.  Don’t worry if you miss this 30 second time frame of perfect texture; you can always put the mixture back on the stove to reheat it and then place it in the freezer again.

Grab your electric mixer and whip that baby up.  Once you have mixed a little, pause, add your desired essential oils and then continue mixing until you’ve reached your ideal texture.  The longer you mix, the more light and fluffy it will become! Spoon into the glass jar and keep it covered when not in use.

Whip it… whip it good

The cream might feel slightly oily when first applied but I promise after a few minutes it will soak into your skin and leave it feeling super soft.

If you have a little more time I would highly recommend the Creme dela CREAM recipe *insert angelic music*.  Seriously amazing stuff.  I use it as my body lotion with a little Lavender essential oil and Gentle Baby oil blend.  I’m also using it to reduce the looks of my stretch marks from having my own gentle baby.

The Creme de la CREAM

  • ½ cup of Almond Oil

  • 3 capsules of Vitamin E Oil
  • 2 Tbsp of Shea Butter

Combine the ingredients in a saucepan and melt until liquid.

I punctured the Vitamin E capsules with a safety pin and squeezed the contents into the saucepan.

Place the saucepan in the freezer for 15 minutes until the liquid becomes a solid, but not hard.

You should still be able to press a hole in the cream without much effort.

Add your choice of essential oils and whip using an electric mixer. Spoon the cream into a glass jar and use often!

Make sure not to add the essential oils until you have reached the mixing stage.  The heat can alter the chemical profile of the essential oils.

Here are a few of my favorite essential oil mixtures to add to a homemade base.

Really the options are endless with these. Find your favorite oils and add them to this base to make them last a little longer.  I think its a fabulous way to use the sample packets included in the starter kits!
